Our family just spent nine months in Bowie, Texas at BBTI–Baptist Bible Translators Institute–preparing to go to Thailand as missionaries. We have had an amazing time. At times, class has been like drinking water from a fire house. There is no way you can take in all the information you are given! One of those “classes” was Jungle Camp.
Essentially, Jungle Camp is when we camp in the back yard of BBTI. Now, growing up, my definition of camping was riding in my grandparent’s motor home, visiting all kinds of cool places, lots of swimming, and my granddaddy’s delicious biscuits. That is not what happens here! From the beginning of school, we heard that you could only eat what you found or killed, make your own shelter, and all kinds of crazy rumors.
Note to self: Do not listen to children!
Needless to say, we were not excited about this part of BBTI. We may, or may not, have been like the Israelites; grumblers and complainers. At some point, we realized our heart was wrong and we needed to let the Lord work. Our prayer became, “Lord, please let me be controlled by Your Spirit, not by my flesh.” Thankfully, He is gracious and mercifully!
First thing on Monday morning, we set up a tent. There is no need for me to tell you how long that took, but thanks to Bro. Schnell, it did get up! Next, was class time. We were each given a small box of matches and asked to start a fire using only one. One! At this point, my flesh was really trying to take over. I prayed, and one box of matches later, we had a fire! This seemed to be the pattern for the week. I would think, “How am I going to do this?” and God would say, “I am.” Eventually, I got the point!
By the end of the week, I could start a fire without a match, our team had floated on a raft across the “river”, made a shelter (that we did not have to sleep in), found edible plants for a salad, collected water and purified it, and all kinds of other things. We have a confidence now in our head knowledge of surviving the wilderness, but more importantly, we have a new found confidence in our Lord to sustain us!
Hi! My name is Rachael and I am a child of God. I was saved from sin and all its bondage at the age of 21. I am married to an incredible man. He constantly challenges me to grow closer to my Saviour. We have three beautiful children that love the Lord. Currently, our family is preparing to go to Thailand as missionaries.
