Deuteronomy 8:3 And He humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.
Romans 8:28 And we know, that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.
All underlines in the verses above were put there by me….not God 🙂
I had to read the verse in Deuteronomy a few times…quite a few times. Why I never saw that before, I’m not sure, but God really worked it into my heart.
Here’s the set-up: After the Egyptians essentially paid the Israelites to leave, they decided they wanted their slaves back. But then they realized, Oops! We need those slaves and revenge is better. It didn’t work out well for the Egyptians, because the Lord was on Israel’s side, and He parted the Red Sea just long enough for His people to cross. The Egyptians? They didn’t make it to the other side. Then the complaining starts. They are hungry, thirsty, tired, it is hot…somehow they are discouraged. Reminds me of Elijah after confronting the prophets of Bael. Or me…
Anyway, all that to say this; “He…suffered thee to hunger… that he might… ”
Phew. Okay. Have you ever HUNGERED for the Lord? I have!! When I first got saved, I could not get enough of His Word (the Bible) or Him.
Since then, He has allowed circumstances where I knew He was all I had.
Other times I’ve hungered for Him have been when I’ve been overwhelmed by His blessings.
Usually, though, I hunger the most when I’m in the midst of a trial or difficult time.
I find that trials and suffering in our lives teach us that this life is not about us or dependent on us. The Israelites had tons of gold and jewels, yet it did them no good in the middle of the desert. They were helpless, so God gave them manna.
God desired for the Israelites to know Him and His Word, so He let them hunger.
Is God letting you hunger? If He is…go ahead and fill up on the Bread of Life!
Hi! My name is Rachael and I am a child of God. I was saved from sin and all its bondage at the age of 21. I am married to an incredible man. He constantly challenges me to grow closer to my Saviour. We have three beautiful children that love the Lord. Currently, our family is preparing to go to Thailand as missionaries.
